The innovative donor lung preservation system safeguards organs with advanced pressure and temperature control, ensuring optimal conditions for transplantation
WALTHAM, MA. November 4, 2024 - Paragonix Technologies, a pioneer in organ transplant technologies and organ procurement services, announces today its BAROguard® System has been recognized as one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2024 in the medical care category. The annual list celebrates the top 200 innovations shaping the future, addressing critical challenges, and transforming lives across various fields, including healthcare, AI, and green energy.
The BAROguard system is the first of its kind. The system integrates clinically proven hypothermic preservation techniques with active airway management control to maintain optimal conditions for donor lungs during transport. Equipped with real-time tracking and reporting, BAROguard delivers continuous data on organ status to surgeons and transplant teams throughout transit. In August 2023, Paragonix Technologies received FDA 510(k) clearance for BAROguard and completed its first-in-human case at Duke University Medical Center in November of the same year.
“The organ transplantation industry has advanced tremendously in recent years, and we’re proud to be at the forefront of innovation in this space,” said Lisa Anderson, Ph.D., president of Paragonix Technologies. “With donor waitlists continuing to grow, it’s crucial to offer technology that safeguards each and every organ. Being recognized alongside so many groundbreaking inventions by TIME highlights the transformative potential of BAROguard and our other preservation devices to make a meaningful impact for millions of transplant recipients, donor families, and healthcare professionals.”
TIME evaluated nominations based on originality, impact, and efficacy, and chose the BAROguard System as one of 2024’s most promising innovations in healthcare. The full TIME Best Inventions list for 2024 is available at time.com/best-inventions-2024.
